Beautiful Remains FAQs:
Is it based on true events?
The story is completely fictional, but the Horsemen and Toad Men are based on real life secret societies from rural England in the 19th century. They were part of the folklore of the time because in those days the only way to farm the fields was with ploughs pulled by horses and so the men who looked after them were very important. Horse societies started in Scotland and were popular around East Anglia in counties like Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as Lincolnshire, which were all heavily rural agricultural areas.
What other folklore is in Beautiful Remains?
The book also touches on witch’s bottles and the practice of burying mummified cats and other symbolic items in the walls and chimneys of houses to ward off witches and evil. This was common practice in England between the 16th and 19th centuries, with the 17th century, at the height of the fears about witches, being particularly popular. People still find these objects in old houses when doing renovations.
What kind of pace is it?
All the Harrison Lane novels are fast paced with short chapters and gripping storylines
“I'm loving this series and this second instalment confirmed my opinions: a well plotted and gripping series featuring an intriguing main character and solid plots.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
